January 22nd - 25th, 2009

The Mylapore Festival, started in 2001, is an event that showcases the culture and heritage of Mylapore. Sundaram Finance has been associated with this event since 2003. This year too, the oldest neighbourhood in the city comes alive with the latest edition of Sundaram Finance Mylapore Festival.

Whats the Festival all about?

How many of us have seen a kolam outside a house and just walked over it…or grumbled about being forced to go to music classes when you were young? These traditions are an inherent part of us and it’s probably because of this that we take their existence for granted.

The Sundaram Finance Mylapore Festival is a celebration of this heritage and tradition. The festival focuses on creating awareness about Mylapore and its rich culture among residents and others. By providing a platform for the common man to exhibit his/her talents, the events try to keep age-old customs and traditions alive.

Highlights of the Festival

The Festival is conducted in the four mada streets of Mylapore around the Kapaleeshwarar temple.

One of the high points of this festival is the “Concert in the Park”, held on all four days in the Nageswara Rao Park, Mylapore. The concerts promote young, upcoming musicians and gives them an opportunity to perform in the park. At the core of the festival is the real and imaginative street art of Tamil women – the Kolam competition.

Apart from this, the other hotspot is the “Art Street” where college students from the city exhibit their talents and skills. Paintings, face-painting, handicrafts…you will find it all here. Women from Self-help groups exhibit their crafts and utility items in the “Crafts Baazar”. Street theatre, folk dances, stilt walkers, puppetry, mythological drama’s… there’s a whole lot of colour to be seen in these “Cultural shows”. The Festival tries to renew the interest of people in some long forgotten games of the yester-years. The Pallankuzhi Contest is on this year too and will be held over two days.

This year there are three Mylapore Walks that take you through the by-lanes of the neighbourhood, show you heritage houses, etc. Call it a nostalgia trip or just learning history, these walks have it all.

The grand event this year is the Sound & Lights show on Mylapore, which proposes to take you back into the historical past of Mylapore. This will be on during all four evenings of the festival. The Chess Square at Nageswara park will be abuzz with young brains cracking a Chess Competition. Come and watch them while they are at it, on the weekends of the festival! Not just these, workshops for kids will be on, Tamil Literary readings and much more awaits you!

Take this chance to revisit vintage Mylapore, witness the neighbourhood in all its glory and most importantly a chance to introspect and take pride in who we are.
